Joan P. Spearing, 98 of Skaneateles died Sunday. Born in Glasgow, Scotland she was predeceased by her husband George in 2000, a daughter Sandra Crofut in 2010 and 10 siblings.
   Surviving are her daughter Linda (Tom) Abbott, 6 grandchildren Christopher (Diana) Abbott, Kimberly Holzwarth, Chelsea Abbott, Spencer (Michelle) Abbott, Timothy and Jeffrey Crofut, great-grandchildren, Emma and Jack Holzwarth and Chase Abbott and several nieces and nephews.     
    Services are private. Burial in lake View Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Dept. or SAVES.

James R. Kaufmann

James R. Kaufmann, 77, of Skaneateles, died Tuesday December 2, 2014. Born in Bronx, NY  he retired as a counselor for the NYC Transit Workers Union. He was a member of St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Skaneateles, the K of C and served in the United State Army.
    Surviving are his wife Pauline Michalski Kaufmann, a daughter Dorothy Kaufmann, a sister Ruth Brosnan (Walter) and 3 nieces. 
  A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 AM Friday in St. Mary’s of the Lake Church. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Auburn. Calling hours will be held Thursday 5 to 7 PM at the Robert D. Gray Funeral Home 49 Jordan St. Skaneateles.

John E. May, 87, of Skaneateles, died Friday December 5, 2014. Born in Brooklyn he was a retired Engineer for General Electric. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Skaneateles, the Skaneateles Rotary Club and Skaneateles Country Club. He was also a former Trustee for the Village of Skaneateles.  
   Surviving are his wife Dolores, 3 sons John, Kenneth and David (Jodi) May and 2 grandchildren Tyler and Christina.
    Services will be held 11 AM Wednesday at the Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles. Burial in Lake View Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home 49 Jordan St. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Skaneateles or the Skaneateles Rotary Club.

Charles H. Crosman, 96, of Skaneateles, New York died December 5, 2014. Born in Auburn, New York, his parents were William B. Crosman and Anita H. Crosman. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret L. Crosman, and is survived by children: Janet L., William B. (Wendy), and Charles C. Crosman, and grandchildren Emily M. Crosman and Maria A. Kennedy.
  Chuck graduated from Colgate University in 1941, then served in WW II as an officer in the Chemical Warfare Service. After the war, he joined the family jewelry business founded in 1873 in Auburn. He became a certified gemologist of the American Gem Society and the third generation owner of the business. He was a lifetime hunter, fisherman, and camper; a past President of Rotary and Paul Harris fellow; and Trustee and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles. Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Helena Jane Benigni

Helena Jane Benigni passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. She was born born in Crates, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1927, the daughter of Margaret Aaron Reinsel and Josef Franz Reinsel.
She was preceded by her husband, Joseph Benigni; mother, Margaret Reinsel and father, Josef Reinsel of Brookville Pa; brother, Arthur Reinsel of Clyde NY; sister Ramona Beatty of Rockton, Pa; Surviving are sons Terrence Benigni of Elbridge and Daniel Benigni of Skaneateles and daughter Kathleen (Patrick) Bullion of Dewitt; Sisters Roseanne Longacre of Arlee Mt. and Marjorie Nairn of Phoenix Az. and brother Stephen Reinsel of St Petersburg Fl. along with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
There will be a funeral mass held a St. Patrick's Church in Jordan, New York Saturday at 10 AM with recitation of the Rosary to begin at 9:30.
Jane was a graduate of Brookville (Pa.)  High School in Brookville, Pa... She was employed there in accounting at Sylvania Electric Products  where she met her husband. She has been a resident of the village of Elbridge, New York since 1960. Following the death of her husband in 1970, she worked  at Elbridge Elementary School as a library aide. In 1976 she became the secretary for the Town Supervisor in the Town of Elbridge, a position she held for 16 years until her retirement.
Jane was a member of St. Patrick's Altar and Rosary Society and an active participant in Perpetual Adoration at her church.
She was a lifelong blood donor for the American Red Cross. She loved to read, serving on the board of Elbridge Free Library and was also a Literacy Volunteer. She loved being with children and was a Cub Scout Den Mother and also taught knitting as a 4 H leader.
She also enjoyed, knitting, crocheting, gardening, golfing, bowling, bird watching, berry picking and following her favorite sports team, the Syracuse Orange.
Donations can be made to the Saint Patrick's Altar & Rosary Society and/or The Elbridge Free Library.
Her family expresses their deepest gratitude to all her friends and neighbors of many, many  years.

James Peter Garofalo, age 91 of Gallatin TN; formerly of Elbridge, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2014. Mr. Garofalo was born September 24, 1923 in Waterloo, NY, son of the late Petrus and Rosa Alessio Garofalo. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Florence M. Jankowski Garofalo; brothers, Ralph J. Garofalo, Victor Garofalo and Arthur Garofalo; sisters, Carmella Dimon and Annie Garofalo. He is survived by wife, Marie Pelletier Garofalo of Gallatin; children, James Peter Garofalo, Jr. of Allentown, PA, Thomas S. Garofalo (Elaine) of St. Petersburg, FL, Marguerite Grosick (Charles) of Syracuse, NY, Peter M. Garofalo (Lesley) of Wilmington, DE, John E. Garofalo (Laura Wilson) of Hypoluxo, FL; stepson, Jack O’Ree of Nashville; sister, Jane DeGregorio of North Tewksbury, MA; seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Garofalo served in the U. S. Navy during WWII where he was a radio technician. He was a licensed ham radio operator and instructor for over 70 years and he retired from General Electric. Also, he attended St. John Vianney Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be at St. Mary’s of the Lake in Skaneateles, May 16th2015 at 10 AM.     On this day December 14, 2014, Helen returned to heaven to the arms of her God. She was born in Navarino October 11, 1921 to Albert & Jennie Searle. She has been predeceased by her mother, father, 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Survived by a sister-in-law, 17 nieces and nephews and many great nieces & nephews. She graduated from Onondaga Central School, worked at Ansco in Binghamton 10 years,  GE in Auburn and Syracuse for 32 years and worked in Skaneateles for 20 years as a meter person.

Alan J. Slater, 47, of Skaneateles died Wednesday December 17th. Born in Auburn he was employed as a Union Carpenter with Local 277. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Mottville.
    Surviving are his parents Ray and Esther Slater, his Fiancé’ Donna Van Wart, Children Madeline Rae and Adam, Brother Dean (Leslie) Slater, Sister Elaine  (Mark) Slater-Kogler, Niece Kaylyn and Nephew Justin.

Richard Kimball, 76, of Skaneateles died Friday December 19, 2014. Born in Auburn he had retired from Universal Parts in Syracuse. He was a US Navy Veteran and was predeceased by his wife, Jennie in 2011. Surviving are a son, Richard J. (Marli) Kimball of Victor; a daughter, Christine (Andrew) Braceras of Portland ME; two sisters, Ruth Kimball and Joan Cook and four grandchildren.

Hulbert Dowling “Howd” Greenfield, 90, of Skaneateles died Monday December 22, 2014. Born in Skaneateles he had been a farmer and had retired from the Onondaga County Highway Dept. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Skaneateles, the Skaneateles Rod & Gun Club and the Kelloggsville Odd Fellows.
   Surviving are his daughter Tracey Lockwood Greenfield Davenport of Skaneateles, granddaughter Emilee Davenport of Glens Falls, nieces Peg (Mike) Card, Susan Murphy and nephews, James, William and Thomas (Lisa) Greenfield and several great nieces and nephews.. RoseMarie S. Langley

RoseMarie S. Langley was born in Eisenach, Germany in 1924. She came to the United States with her parents in 1929. She attended Syracuse University's Fine Arts program in 1941. She worked at the Skaneateles Pennysaver. She also was employed by Haba Toys and then the Skaneateles Library Association for many years.
 
Rosie, as her friends knew her was active in her community. She volunteered for Literacy Volunteers, and Meals on Wheels. She belonged to Esther/Sarah Circle of the Presbyterian Church, the Skaneateles Country Club, Book Club, and Bridge Club .Rosie was a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. She shared her home with many foreign exchange students and teachers. She taught art at State Street Skaneateles Elementary.
She produced a body of nature themed pastel compositions at 72. Her picture of a windswept barn was chosen for the cover of the YA novel, "The Complete Tales from the Edge of the Woods" At age 89 she experienced the thrill of selling her first painting.
 
Rosie belonged to the Skaneateles Ski Club. She took up cross country skiing and golf. She was a talented gardener. She was a bird watcher and delighted in wild life identification. She and her husband Marvin traveled abroad many times.
 
Rosie was predeceased by her former husbands Farris Smith and Craig Bliss. She is survived by her loving husband, Marvin, daughter Rachael Z. Ikins " Sherrie" of Baldwinsville, son, David  Smith (Kim) grandsons Carter and Mason of Baldwinsville  her sister, Eleanor W.(Joe) Hubbard of Skaneateles  two nieces, and lots of extended family.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Skaneateles NY Saturday January 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with celebration of her life and artwork to follow at the church. Private family burial.
 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA, the Humane Society and the Skaneateles Library Association.

Edna "Eddie" Bardwell

Edna “Eddie” Bardwell, 90, of Syracuse formerly Skaneateles, NY and Bala-Cynwyd, PA passed away Saturday at Van Duyn Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. Eddie was a communicant of St James Episcopal Church in Skaneateles and the Ecumenical Church at the Villas of Summerfield.
She was a graduate of Collingswood High School in Collingswood, NJ and Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, PA. She taught nursery school at Merion Friends School for 15 years.
She was an active member of Skaneateles Country Club and Skaneateles Garden Club. Among her many hobbies she enjoyed knitting, needlework, smocking, quilting, music and painting.
Eddie is predeceased by her parents, William and Dorothy Andrew, her husband, Nuel and her brother H. Ronald Andrew (Helen Andrew).
Surviving are one daughter Barbara Honcharski (Robert) of Skaneateles, two sons; Bruce (Sharon) of Homer, AK; Stuart (Hillary) of Princeton, NJ; 6 grandchildren Paul, Beth, Bethany, Jeremy, Shannon, Jamie and 6 great grandchildren.
Friends may call Thursday, January 1 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, 49 Jordan Street, Skaneateles.  A funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday January 2 at St. James Episcopal Church, 96 East Genesee Street, Skaneateles.

George Slater, 88, of Skaneateles, died Saturday January 10, 2015. Born in Syracuse to Ora and Thelma Slater, he had retired from General Crushed Stone in Jamesville. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He was predeceased by his wife Estella in 2011.

Eileen W. Karlik, 93, of Skaneateles, died Sunday, January 18, 2015. She previously worked as a rural mail carrier for the Skaneateles Post Office. Eileen was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Skaneateles, the Women of St. James and was on the Thrift Shop board, also the Marcellus and Skaneateles Grange, Seniors' of Skaneateles and was a Hospice volunteer and a charter member of SAVES. She was predeceased by her husband, John in 1980; her parents, Oliver and Edith Weeks; sisters, Edith Davis Stott and Gwendolyn Templer; brothers, Ronald and Douglas Weeks and grandson, Matthew Brock. Surviving are her daughter, G. Maureen Brock; a son, Kenneth Karlik; granddaughter, Allison Brock; five grandsons, Jeffrey Brock, John J., Tyler, Timothy and Kenneth D. Karlik; great-granddaughter, Bailey Karlik; three nieces, M. Jean Millier, Donna Smith and Diane Burdick. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in St. James Episcopal Church. Melinda Bourque

Melinda Bourque, 45, of Skaneateles has succumbed to the effects of a year-long battle with lung cancer. She was brave to the end. She is survived by her daughters: Thompson (Dean), Mattie, and Sydney; her adored grandson, Myles; her parents, Ronald and Carol Bourque; sister, Michelle Dougherty; brothers, Richard and Timothy; grandmother, Velda Amidon; several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins as well as many friends. Robert Weinerth

Robert Weinerth, 90, passed away Monday, February 9, 2015.  He passed peacefully in his residence through Seneca Cayuga ARC in Seneca Falls.  Staff who have known Robert well and have worked with him for decades were by his side.  Robert was involved with ARC for over 23 years.  He was born in Ithaca, New York. He loved slap stick and had a wicked sense of humor.  Robert was well known for making sure all the chairs were pushed in neatly under the dining room table.  He often would move a chair to another location when someone stood up for a minute causing the person to fall. He had staff well trained to check before sitting back down.  Calling hours will be held Tuesday, February 17 from 11:00am – 12:00pm at the Robert Gray Funeral Home in Skaneateles, NY.  The funeral service will take place immediately after.  Father Thomas McGrath will preside. 

John France Corrigan

John France Corrigan was born on July 8, l939 to William and Betty Corrigan in New Rochelle, NY.  He attended Albany Academy from the first through the twelfth grades, graduating in l957.  He then graduated from Worcester Academy in l958, and graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., in l962.  Upon graduation, he went to Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I. and served in the U.S. Navy until 1966.  He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
In l966 he joined Dean Witter, and retired from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in 2004. John was a member off the Skaneateles Rotary Club, the Skaneateles Country Club, the Bandits Golf Group, and St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Skaneateles.
      He is survived by his son, Peter Moore Corrigan (Katy), three grandchildren, James, Maeve, and Daniel of Lakewood, Ohio, his brother William E. (Anita) Corrigan of Rumford, R.I., two nephews and a niece.
    Calling hours will be held 4-7pm Friday February 20th at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home 49 Jordan St.  Skaneateles.  A funeral Mass will be offered at 10am Saturday February 21st at St. Mary's of the Lake, Skaneateles.  Friends and family are invited to light refreshments following the funeral service at St. Mary's. John Richard (Dick) DeWitt

John Richard (Dick) DeWitt, 72, of Moravia (New Hope), died unexpectedly Sunday, February 15, 2015 in Auburn Community Hospital. Dick was born April 26, 1942 in Auburn, the son of Stephen and Myrtle DeWitt. He had been a resident of the area all his life. Surviving is his wife of 50 years Lorna Stoyell DeWitt, along with his children Jeffery (Joanna) DeWitt, Sandra (Thomas) Badman and Thomas (Beth) DeWitt, along with eight grandchildren and one great grandson, two brothers Stephen (Elsa) DeWitt, Louie (Johanna) DeWitt and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and daughter Sherri Lynn. He was a graduate of Moravia Central School class of 1960. Dick joined the US Army in 1964,  became a NYS State Trooper in 1966 and retired in 1987. Dick had a passion for, family, farming and fishing. Dick was Niles Town Supervisor for 12 years and was instrumental in starting and managing the Niles Farmers Market. He was also a member of New Hope Fire Department, Mid-Lakes United Methodist Church and the Farm Bureau. Calling hours will be held 4-8pm Thursday, February 19th at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home 49 Jordan St.  Skaneateles. A Memorial Service will be held at Mid-Lakes United  Methodist Church in New Hope on Friday, February 20th at 10am.
