Our sweet mystery of life, Josephine Montgomery Gregg, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2020.  She will always be remembered as a person who saw the bright side in every situation.  While she projected an aura of lightness and joy, Jo possessed incredible leadership skills and administrative savvy.  She was a founding member and President of the Skaneateles Cooperative Nursery School, President of the Skaneateles Garden Club, and President of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers of St. Mary’s of the Lake Church. She was President of the Austin Park Development Fund and, in the mid 1960’s, Jo developed and participated in the successful annual fundraiser known as “Skane-E-Antics,” which featured humorous performances by dozens of residents each year. She was a founding member and later President of the Skaneateles Unit of the Syracuse Symphony Guild, President of the Syracuse Symphony Guild, and President of the board of the Opera Theatre of Syracuse.  Jo built the annual “Polo for Opera” event, which was held throughout the 1980’s and 90’s.
She was the first woman to receive the Skaneateles Jaycees Award and awarded “Citizen of the Year” by the Skaneateles Chamber of Commerce.  The Junior League of Syracuse gave her a Lifetime Achievement Award and the Cultural Resources Council honored her with their Service to the Arts Award.
She was the broker/owner of a successful residential real estate firm, based in Skaneateles, for more than three decades.
Jo, the youngest of three children, was born on June 6, 1925 in Atlantic City NJ.  Her father, Harold B. Montgomery, was the general manager of the renowned Traymore Hotel until the Great Depression struck.  Jo never forgot how her mother, Leonide Dagit Montgomery, picked up the pieces of their shattered lives and provided for the family.  Her mother’s drive and determination inspired Jo in many ways through the challenging times in her life.
Jo’s husband, Holland C. Gregg II, was enlisted in the US Army Air Force and stationed in Atlantic City and, during World War II, Jo, her sister and her mother participated in USO dance parties, where Jo and Holly met.   They married in 1946 and moved to Holly’s hometown of Ithaca, NY.  Shortly thereafter they relocated to Syracuse where Jo would meet many life-long friends.   She and her family, including three children, moved to Skaneateles in 1957.   The New Year’s Eve parties at the Gregg household over three decades were the stuff of legend.
She and Holly were avid skiers and were founding members of the Skaneateles Ski Club.  Jo loved playing golf and tennis in Skaneateles and in Vero Beach, FL where, in their later years, she and Holly spent their winter months.
Jo is predeceased by her husband and her grandson, Holland C. Gregg IV, and longtime friend, William Livingston.   She is survived by her three children, Leonide (Bob) Connelly, Holland (Patience) Gregg, and James (Emily) Gregg.  She is also survived by her grandchildren Christopher (Adelaide) Connelly, Beth Connelly, Jonathan Connelly (fiancé Dena Copani), Marietta (Thomas) Bolster, JJ Gregg and Keely Gregg.  She adored her great grandchildren Sean Connelly, JP Connelly, Quinn Connelly, Avery Bolster, Benjamin Bolster, Luna Bolster and Nova Bolster, Griffin Connelly, Keegan Connelly and Sam Copani.
A celebration of Jo’s life will be held on May 2, 2020 at 11:00 am at Saint Mary’s of the Lake Church in Skaneateles.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Holland C. William Frederick Huther

William Frederick Huther of Skaneateles, known to many as “Bill”, and many more as “Coach”, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 28, 2020. He was in one of his favorite places, Sanibel Island, Florida, enjoying time with his wife and family when he passed away.
Born in Utica, NY on December 9, 1934, he lived in both Hamilton, NY and Auburn, NY. Bill graduated from Auburn East High School in 1952 and played on the undefeated 1950 football team. In 1956, he received his Bachelors of Arts degree in History from Colgate University where he played basketball, baseball, and track, and was a teammate on the 1955 baseball team that played in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The following year, Bill returned to Colgate and received a Master’s of Arts degree in Physical Education.
Bill served in the U.S. Army First Division (The Big Red One) in Fort Riley, Kansas and Baumholder, Germany. He taught physical education, health, and coached football, basketball, baseball and tennis at various levels at Auburn Central High from 1959-1970. In 1968-1969 he was a Fulbright Exchange Teacher at Marshalswick School in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. Bill became a Guidance Counselor at Auburn High School in 1970, where he had a profound impact on the lives of generations of Auburn students until his retirement in 1994. Bill often said that teaching was “caught, not taught”, and there were no truer words to describe how he treated his work. The values of service, education, and the importance of athletics in personal development were instilled in Bill at a very young age by his parents, and he lived his life focused on building relationships with students, teaching them about citizenship, sportsmanship and personal responsibility. After retiring from the district, he continued to invest in young people as an Area Admissions Representative for Albright College in Reading, PA until 2009.
Bill was an avid athlete well beyond high school and college. He played semi-pro basketball for Kufs News, The Italian Village and Pecorello’s Market in Utica. He taught tennis during the summers in Wilmington, DE; Hamilton, Bermuda; and the Owasco Country Club in Auburn. Bill was a five-time Auburn Men’s Singles Tennis Champion, and the 1991 National Senior Games Men’s Singles Tennis Champion (ages 55-59), as well as the National Men’s Doubles Tennis runner-up the same year. His dedication to the athletic and educational programs of Central New York were recognized with a Section III Service Award in 1973. In 2002, he was honored to be elected alongside his father Joseph (posthumously) to the Auburn High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
A true citizen of the world, Bill remained active in a variety of organizations that were near and dear to him throughout his life including NYSRTA, The Cayuga Museum, The Schweinfurth Museum, Rockport Massachusetts Art Association, and Townsend Lawn Tennis Club in St Albans, England. He had also been active with Teenage March of Dimes, the Cayuga County Mental Health Association, was an advisor to YMCA Hi Y groups, and the treasurer of Friends in Service Here (F.I.S.H) in Skaneateles. Throughout Bill’s life he enjoyed - and excelled - at his many hobbies including golf, tennis, and oil painting.
Bill loved where he grew up and the communities, he lived in. Along the way, he seemed to make a connection with everyone and those relationships only grew stronger over the years. Former colleagues, students, and friends from throughout his life were always on his mind and in his heart. None of these connections, however, were as important to him as his love for his family, especially his six adoring grandchildren. In recent years, you could find “Bompa”, at birthday parties, sporting events, concerts, or on the floor playing with truckies. No family moment was missed, and every milestone was celebrated with a phone call, congratulatory note, or hug.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Cornelia Huther of Auburn and Hamilton, NY and Tavares, FL and grand-nephew Graham Murphy of Liverpool, NY.
Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years Carol, daughter Erika (Jason) Clark and grandchildren Leah, Jackson and Tabor of Marcellus NY; son Kevin (Christina) Huther and grandchildren William, Petra and Lukas of Medfield, MA; exchange daughter Kaisa (Jari) Kortesoja, and their children Eeva, Eero and Aune of Pori, Finland; sister-in-law Susan Bobbett of Saratoga Springs, NY; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 2-6pm Sunday, March 8th at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Monday, March 9th at the First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles, 97 East Genesee Street with a burial to follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Skaneateles.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the E. Robert “Bob” Manning Atkinson, 64, of Skaneateles passed peacefully on May 4th,2020 in the loving presence of his family.
Bob was predeceased by his father Lowell “Pete” Atkinson and his mother Elinor.
Bob was a life resident of Skaneateles and a graduate of Skaneateles High School. He received a degree in Business Administration from Syracuse University. This degree served him well when he assumed the presidency of Sunnycrest Precast of Auburn in 1988 after the retirement of his father. Bob expanded the company from a modest size into the large, well respected business it is today. Bob was the past president of the NYS Concrete Burial Vault Association for many years.
A devoted family man, Bob’s love of his family had no boundaries and that love inspired his involvement in the community.  He was the President of Skaneateles Early Childhood Center for several years, overseeing their expansion and the relocation into their current facility. He then transitioned into active service as a Boy Scout den leader, traveling with his son and troop on many adventures. Bob was active as a local baseball and basketball coach for his son and daughter. When the children transitioned to a higher level of play, Bob was seen on the sidelines carrying his camera, another life passion, capturing the perfect action shot. Bob’s images were often seen in the local newspaper.  The Atkinson family made wonderful memories boating on Skaneateles lake and vacationing in Cape May where Bob also enjoyed summer vacations as a child.  A perfect evening after work would entail a nice grilled meal, glass of fine Cabernet and the company of his family while watching an exciting sporting event.
You may not have known Bob personally but he may have touched your life when you suffered the loss of a loved one. Sunnycrest is the local manufacturer of concrete burial vaults and he likely served you with respectful, behind the scenes, care.
Bob, you are missed.

In Borodino, Jack was actively involved with his children taking his children fishing and sledding, and teaching them to garden.  He enjoyed playing alongside with his children in many outdoor games including soccer, baseball and kick the can.  Time with his children also included making homemade ice cream (with icicles) and he especially loved treating his children to ice cream at the Ice Cream Stand.
Fran and Jack enjoyed Square Dancing together weekly with the Cayuga Cut Ups for over 40 years.  They also enjoyed taking trips with the Sennett Seniors and attending plays at the Merry Go Round Theatre in Auburn, as well as the Cortland Repertory Theatre. They attended several plays together of their grandchildren’s as well as dance recitals and other events.
Jack was employed as a Crane Operator until his retirement at 78, with Welch Construction of Marcellus.  Prior, he worked for Angelo Spadotto and Cliff Hayden, also of Marcellus.  In addition to his full time job, Jack opened his own Locksmith business (Jack’s Lock Shop) in 1988 and continued to serve the Skaneateles, Marcellus and Auburn area for close to 30 years.  He enjoyed helping his community always, and will be remembered for opening many doors…and changing many locks. He was a good father who always took care of his children and did the best he could to provide for them, a loving grandpa and “great-grandpa” to many. Jack was a strong, proud and good man. He was loved and will be missed by many!
He is preceded in death by his wife Frances (Kenney) Hole, his parents, Ella (Simmons) Hole and Wilfred Hole.  His brother, Fredrick Robert Hole (Bud), and sisters Helen Louise Badman and Marjorie Pearl Hole.
Jack is survived by his 6 children, 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and a brother;  Barbara (Stephen)Geier of Edgewater, MD, (GC Jeffrey and Adam),  Janice Beaman of Syracuse, NY ( GC Nathan (Nora) Beaman, GGC Maggie, GC Brandon Beaman, GC Christopher Beaman GGC Trenidy),  Jeanne (Keith) Harter, of Fulton, NY, (GC William Hudson and (Olivia Frost )GGC Jack, Alicia (Keith) Wise, GGC Grey, Bram, Navy, GC Markus, Mallory Harter), Jacqueline (Andrew) Holmes of Sorrento, FL,( GC Maris), Robert (Dr. Julianne Randall)Hole of Binghamton, NY, (GC Michelle (Joe) Cheeseman, GC Matthew), Kathleen (JD) Thomas of Syracuse, NY, (GC Delana, SGC Kaeli Burgess(Ben), SGGC Noah and Lyla , SGC Chris Thomas (Tracey Cornes), SGGC Aria and Loreli and SGC Alec Thomas); brother, Elmer Eugene Hole(Gene) of Owasco ; and a host of nieces and  nephews.
A private viewing by immediate family will be held on June 4th at Robert D. William Edmund “Honey” Leubner, 91, of Skaneateles, died on June 16th of heart disease.
He was born July 13, 1928 in Marietta NY to German immigrant parents, Edmund and Bertha Leubner, and was very proud of his German heritage.
“Honey” was a farmer all of his life. He grew up on the Leubner family farm in Marietta, then owned his own dairy farm on Benson Road in Skaneateles, NY. He married Narcissa Ann Bainbridge on March 1, 1953 Together they worked the farm and had 6 children, Jeffrey (Sue), Pamela (Emil), Christopher(deceased), Kathleen, Jason, and Cynthia. The farm prospered, and grew to one of the largest and most successful farms in the area in the 1970’s. Ed was always trying new farming techniques, seeds, and cultivation methods. He was not afraid to try and succeed, or try and fail, which is one of the many great lessons he passed along to his family. When Ed retired in the late 1990’s, he sold the farm and moved to Weeks Road, where he lived until his death.
Ed loved trees, and planted hundreds in his lifetime. He loved animals and wildlife, and would bring home orphaned raccoons, fawns, and crows from the fields. He would catch and surprise his children with bats and mice he found in the barn. He leaves behind his beloved beagle, Bailey. Ed also loved to travel. Florida was Ann and his preferred destination during the harsh central NY winters, but he also traveled to Germany on several occasions, and met his German relatives and family there. The highlight was visiting the village where his mother was born and grew up, Ersrode, and staying in the same house his grandfather had taught in as a school teacher in the 1880’s. Ed loved old cars, and owned a Model A Ford similar to the one his father owned. He often took his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to get ice cream in his Model A. Ed will be remembered by his family for his great sense of humor, his strong work ethic, his love of all things German, his sweet tooth, his big heart, his honesty, and his faith in Christ. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, and will spend eternity with his beloved wife Ann. He is survived by his brother Fred Leubner (Alice), his sister Marie Watts, 5 of his 6 children, 12 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
The services will be private at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles. Ed will be laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Mausoleums in Auburn.

Joan Barbara (Kellogg) Chapman, 90 of Skaneateles played her last round of pitch and was welcomed home on June 19, 2020.  She was born December 24, 1929 in Elbridge, NY to the late Jack and Mildred (Platt) Kellogg.  Joan attended Elbridge High School and went on to hold jobs at the Jordan Wire Mill and as an adored cafeteria lady for Skaneateles schools.
Joan enjoyed playing cards, bingo, bowling, and camping.  She was a huge SU basketball and NY Yankees fan, even listening to the games on her small radio when she couldn’t get them on her TV.  She was the 1977 Masters bowling champion and still keeps that trophy proudly displayed, but her greatest love was always found in the times she spent surrounded by family, especially her great grandchildren who brought the biggest smile to her face.  Affectionately known as “Granny” to them, she always made sure the candy dish was overflowing and plenty of cookies were on hand.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by the love of her life, Bob in 1997; her infant son Mark in 1965 and the sisters she cherished so deeply - Helen and Betty.
Surviving are her children, Debra and Robert (Patti)- both of Skaneateles; grandchildren Michelle (Jim), Danielle (Jamie), Todd (Jaime), Rob (Kate), Brad (Jane); 11 great grandchildren; loving sister Mickey O’Neill; several nieces and nephews that she cherished so deeply; and the “card” girls that were like sisters to her.
Joan will always be remembered as our “Ace of diamonds” and today we raise a glass to her life and the lasting memories of love & laughter she leaves behind.
A private funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s of the lake - Skaneateles on Thursday, June 25th (the birthday of her infant son Mark). With burial to follow at St. Mary’s cemetery where she will be laid to rest alongside Bob.
